Read this fictional account. Yesterday, Yuna studied Korean with a friend at the library, read a book, and did not go to school. It practises written understanding, not a real person’s schedule.

어제 친구하고 같이 도서관에서 한국어를 공부했어요.

Yesterday I studied Korean at the library with a friend.

한국어를 공부하고 책을 읽었어요.

I studied Korean and read a book.

학교에 안 갔어요.

Examples in this unit are text-based. No pronunciation recording or automatic speaking score is used.

Useful basics on this page
친구하고 같이: do something together →친구하고 같이 공부해요.

I study together with a friend.

안 갔어요: say what you did not do →어제 학교에 안 갔어요.

I did not go to school yesterday.

-고: connect two familiar actions →밥을 먹고 공부해요.

I eat a meal and study.

Notice the pattern

Read one chunk at a time: 어제 (when), 친구하고 같이 (with whom), 도서관에서 (where the action happens), 한국어를 공부했어요 (what happened). 읽었어요 is the past form of the familiar 읽어요. Repeated subjects and time phrases can be omitted when the context stays clear. Do not add events or reasons that the account does not give.

Try it yourself

Who studied with Yuna in the account?

Where did the studying happen?

Which event did NOT happen in the account?

Build “Yesterday I studied together with a friend.”

…

Can we conclude that Yuna missed school because she was ill?

RETRIEVE BEFORE YOU REVEAL

Say it in your own time.

Retell a fictional yesterday: study with a friend, then say you did not go to school.
