Combine the short negative 안 with past forms from Unit 6: 안 갔어요 means did not go; 안 먹었어요 means did not eat. With the activity 공부하다, use 공부 안 했어요 for did not study.

어제 학교에 안 갔어요.

I did not go to school yesterday.

어제 밥을 안 먹었어요.

I did not eat a meal yesterday.

어제 공부 안 했어요.

I did not study yesterday.

Examples in this unit are text-based. No pronunciation recording or automatic speaking score is used.

Useful basics on this page
갔어요, 먹었어요, 했어요: familiar past actions →어제 학교에 갔어요.

I went to school yesterday.

안: say you do not do something →커피를 안 마셔요.

I do not drink coffee.

Notice the pattern

Keep 안 separate from the following verb. Compare 안 가요 / 안 갔어요 and 공부 안 해요 / 공부 안 했어요. This states that the action did not happen; it does not by itself tell you whether the person was unable or unwilling to do it. 아니에요 negates noun identity and does not replace the action negative in these sentences.

Try it yourself

Choose “I did not go to school yesterday”.

Choose the short past negative for studying.

Does 안 갔어요 by itself explain why someone did not go?

Build “I did not eat a meal yesterday.”

Which is the earlier present/nonpast negative pattern?

RETRIEVE BEFORE YOU REVEAL

Say it in your own time.

Describe a fictional yesterday when you did not go to school or study.
