갔어요, 먹었어요, 했어요: familiar past actions

Describe yesterday using a small set of learned past forms.

For these verbs, a past marker combines with the stem and the polite ending: 가다 → 갔어요, 먹다 → 먹었어요, 하다 → 했어요. 공부하다 becomes 공부했어요.

어제 학교에 갔어요.

I went to school yesterday.

어제 밥을 먹었어요.

I ate a meal yesterday.

어제 한국어를 공부했어요.

I studied Korean yesterday.

Examples in this unit are text-based. No pronunciation recording or automatic speaking score is used.

Notice the pattern

Compare 가요/갔어요, 먹어요/먹었어요 and 해요/했어요. These examples introduce the past with familiar verbs; they do not cover all stems or irregular conjugations. Keep location and object particles the same as in the corresponding present statements.

Try it yourself

Choose “went”.

Choose “ate a meal”.

Past form of 공부해요?
