People and places · LESSON 2 / 4
Countries, people and language names
Say a nationality and distinguish a country from a language name.
Keep country, person and language separate. 한국 is Korea, 한국 사람 is a Korean person, and 한국어 is the Korean language. 일본 is Japan, 일본 사람 is a Japanese person, and 일본어 is the Japanese language. These two countries are a small practice set, not a list of all nationalities.
I am Korean. A fictional self-introduction.
Junho is Japanese in this fictional profile.
Korea · a Korean person · the Korean language
Japan · a Japanese person · the Japanese language
New Unit 2 examples are text-based. No pronunciation recording or automatic speaking score is used.
In 한국 사람 and 일본 사람, 사람 means person. 사람 ends in final ㅁ, so use 사람이에요. Leave a space between the country name and 사람. 한국어 and 일본어 are language names. A nationality does not tell us what languages someone speaks; this lesson makes no such assumption.
