A useful noun negative · LESSON 3 / 4

이/가 아니에요: say what someone is not

Negate a noun statement with 이/가 아니에요.

학생이에요 means “am/is a student”. 학생이 아니에요 means “am/is not a student”. Keep the same clear situation and change the noun statement to a negative.

저는 학생이 아니에요.

I am not a student.

저는 의사가 아니에요.

I am not a doctor.

학생이에요. → 학생이 아니에요.

A student → not a student.

의사예요. → 의사가 아니에요.

A doctor → not a doctor.

New Unit 2 examples are text-based. No pronunciation recording or automatic speaking score is used.

Notice the pattern

For this noun-negative pattern, use 이 아니에요 after a noun with a final consonant, and 가 아니에요 after a noun without one. Write 학생이 and 의사가 together, then a space before 아니에요. The correct spelling is 아니에요, not 아니예요. The 이/가 here belongs to this construction; we are not yet covering every use of these particles. This is not the negative pattern for action verbs.

Try it yourself

Choose “I am not a student”.

Complete 의사__ 아니에요.
