One pattern, two forms · LESSON 3 / 4

이에요 or 예요?

Use a noun’s final consonant to choose 이에요 or 예요.

You can say what someone is with a noun and a polite ending. A student introducing their role can say 학생이에요. A doctor can say 의사예요.

학생 → 학생이에요.

student → I am a student, in a self-introduction.

의사 → 의사예요.

doctor → I am a doctor, in a self-introduction.

Notice the pattern

After a noun ending in a final consonant, use 이에요. After a noun ending in a vowel, use 예요. 학생 ends in 생, with final ㅇ. 의사 ends in 사, with no final consonant. Depending on context, the same phrase can describe someone else. This lesson uses polite present noun statements.
